Caring for Your New Piercing
Do Not Touch Your Piercing
The only time you should touch your piercing is when you are cleaning it, and you must always wash your hands first.
Do Not Remove Your Jewelry
New piercings can shrink quickly when jewelry is removed, which can make it painful—or even impossible—to reinsert.
Body Piercing Aftercare
Use Sterile Wound-Care Saline (Morning and Evening)
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Either spray the saline directly onto the piercing to flush it, or soak a non-woven gauze in saline and gently apply it to the piercing.
- You may need to use a cotton swab or non-woven gauze to clean away any debris (“crusties”) that collects on the jewelry.
- It’s not necessary to rinse off the saline, but if you do, make sure to use clean, running water.
- If your jewelry is threaded (like barbells), check to ensure it’s still tight—remember, “righty tighty, lefty loosey.”
What to Avoid While Healing a Body Piercing
- Avoid touching your piercing, except during cleaning.
- Avoid oral contact or contact with other people’s body fluids.
- Avoid using unapproved aftercare products or ointments that weren’t suggested by your piercer.
- Avoid getting lotions or makeup in or around your piercing.
- Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, etc.
